Sesame Grilled Asparagus

Adapted from How to Grill, by Steven Raichlen

MAKES 4 SERVINGS
  • 1 pound asparagus
  • 2 tablespoons dark sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • Coarsely ground salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds

1. Set up the grill for direct grilling and preheat to high.

2. Snap off the woody bases of the asparagus and discard. Skewer 4 or 5 asparagus spears together, using toothpicks or bamboo skewers.

3. In a small bowl, combine the sesame oil, soy sauce and garlic, and stir with a fork to mix. Brush the mixture onto the asparagus on both sides. Season with salt and pepper; reserve.

4. When ready to cook, place the asparagus on the hot grate and grill until nicely browned on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Sprinkle the asparagus with sesame seeds as they grill. Serve as a raft or unskewered.
